Instructions

Prep Produce

  • Cut the sweet onion into rings, then slice them in half.

Shred Your Cheese

  • Shred 8 oz of Gruyere cheese.

Caramelize Onions

  • Melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized (about 10-15 minutes).
  • Add 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp thyme, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp black pepper to the onions. Stir to combine

Assemble & Fry Bread

  • Butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread.
  • Place the bread slices butter side down. Add shredded Gruyere cheese to both sides.
  • Top one side with caramelized onions, then press the slices together to form a sandwich.
  • Add a tsp of butter to the skillet and fry the sandwich over medium-low heat for about 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
  • Cover the pan while grilling to ensure the cheese melts evenly.
