Spicy deviled eggs are a variation of the classic deviled eggs recipe, in which the filling of the eggs is seasoned with spices to give it a little bit of heat. The traditional deviled egg recipe is made by cutting hard-boiled eggs in half, scooping out the yolks, mixing them with mayonnaise, mustard, and other seasonings, and then filling the egg whites with the mixture.
These can be made by adding some hot sauce, chili powder, cayenne pepper, or any other spicy ingredient to the yolk mixture before filling the egg whites. It can be served as an appetizer or side dish, and they are popular in parties or potlucks.
Personally, traditional deviled eggs are fine, but I always appreciate some good heat. You don’t even need to add too much seasoning to bring up the level of heat, but if you’re going to bring something for people to enjoy, at least bring something a little different.
12 Eggs
1 Cup of Mayonnaise
1/2 cup Relish
1/4 cup Dijon Mustard
1/2 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar
1 tsp Smoked Paprika
1/4 tsp Cayenne pepper
The general time to boil eggs for hard-boiled eggs is about 10-12 minutes.
To hard-boil eggs, place the eggs in a saucepan and cover them with cold water by about an inch. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then remove the pan from the heat and cover it with a lid. Let the eggs sit in the hot water for 10-12 minutes. After the eggs are done, remove them from the hot water and place them in a bowl of ice water to cool down.
Keep in mind that the size of the eggs, altitude and the temperature of the eggs before boiling could all affect the boiling time. It’s always recommended to check the doneness of the egg by gently spinning it, if the yolk is still wobbly then it needs more time.
Soaking hard-boiled eggs in cold water after boiling helps to cool them down quickly and also makes them easier to peel. When eggs are boiled, the heat causes the proteins in the egg whites to expand and contract. This can cause small cracks to form in the shells, which can make them difficult to peel.
When the eggs are placed in cold water, it cools them down and stops the cooking process, this helps to prevent the eggs from continuing to cook and helps to contract the proteins and preventing the eggs from sticking to the shell. This makes the eggs much easier to peel. The cold water also helps in stopping the cooking process which prevents the yolk from becoming gray and greenish ring around the yolk that is caused by a reaction between sulfur and iron in the egg.
Soaking the eggs in cold water for a few minutes after boiling helps to ensure that the eggs are easy to peel and have a nice, consistent color.
It’s worth trying different methods to see which one works best for you, as some methods may work better for certain types of eggs or depending on the freshness of the eggs. I tend to do a combination of 1 and 2, but I’m also not very good at this step.
Once peeled, split the egg into half to remove the yolk.
Set aside the egg whites for later, and place the yolk into a bowl for the next step.
Using a fork, mash the yolk down until all the chunks are out. Mashing the yolk in deviled eggs helps to create a smooth and creamy filling. This allows for the addition of other ingredients, such as mayonnaise, mustard, and spices, to be evenly incorporated, resulting in a uniform flavor and texture. Mashing the yolk helps to break down the egg yolk, making it easier to mix and spread the filling evenly into the egg white halves.
Once egg yolks are mashed, combine:
Be very careful with the spices, adding too much cayenne will make these way too spicy for people to enjoy. The addition of spices to food can enhance the flavor and make it taste better for some people because it adds complexity and depth to the overall taste. Spices can also help to bring out the natural flavors of the ingredients in a dish. Some spicy foods can activate the release of endorphins, which can give a temporary feeling of pleasure and excitement, making the food taste even better.
It’s important to note that not everyone likes spicy food and that everyone has different levels of tolerance for spice. The enjoyment of spicy food is a personal preference and can vary greatly from person to person. In my opinion, adding just a little heat can make any dish more interesting and make it stand out a bit.
Also, don’t hesitate to add some salt and pepper, too.
Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are blended evenly.
Let this refrigerate for at least 20 minutes before adding to the egg whites.
Align your egg whites and fill them with your spicy deviled egg mixture.
There are several ways to fill egg whites with yolk mixture, here are a few popular methods:
The most important thing is to be gentle and not overfill the egg whites, so they keep their shape and presentation. I’m not the most crafty person, but tip #2 worked relatively well for me.
I’m going to be honest, I have no idea where I got this egg tray from, I’m pretty sure my mom gave it to me when I bought a house because she just never used it. I can’t even find a duplicate online, but this is Anchor Hocking Company Plate looks close enough.
Sprinkle the eggs with some additional paprika and enjoy some spicy deviled eggs!
Deviled eggs have a long history, with a variety of theories about their origin. They are often thought to have originated in ancient Rome, where dishes made with yolks mixed with spices were popular. Some food historians believe that the term “deviled” was used to describe foods that were highly seasoned or spicy.
The dish seems to have evolved over time and spread to various cultures, with variations appearing in medieval Europe and colonial America. The deviled eggs as we know them today, which typically include a mixture of yolks, mayonnaise, and mustard, became popular in the United States in the 19th century, and were often served as a starter or a snack at parties and picnics.
