How To Make French Toast Bites

Step 1

Cut Bread

 

 

 

The bread of choice for these French toast bites is brioche bread.

 

Brioche bread is commonly used for French toast because of its rich, buttery flavor and tender texture. Brioche is a type of bread that is made with a high proportion of eggs, butter, and sugar, which gives it a soft, light texture and a slightly sweet flavor.

 

When brioche bread is used for French toast, it absorbs the egg and milk mixture well and retains its shape, while still being tender and moist. The buttery flavor of brioche complements the sweetness of the cinnamon and sugar often used in French toast recipes.

 

 

 

Cut the bread twice vertically, creating 3 evenish strips.

 

 

Then, cut the bread twice horizontally, creating 3 even bite size pieces.

 

 

Repeat this step for at least 4 slices of the brioche bread, but probably not more than 6 slices. Set aside as you begin making your egg mixture.

 

Step 2

The egg mixture used for Fench toast is referred to as a batter or custard. Typical ingredients include:

For this recipe, we will be doing:

 

  • 3 eggs
  • 3/4 cup of milk
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2  tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper

 

While not as common as some of the other ingredients, salt and pepper can also be added to French toast batter for additional flavor. Salt can help to bring out the sweetness of the bread and balance the flavors in the dish, while pepper can add a subtle spiciness. However, it’s important to use these seasonings in moderation so as not to overpower the other flavors in the French toast.

Step 3

Mix Sugar & Cinnamon

The cinnamon and sugar are usually mixed together in a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio, with the cinnamon providing a warm, spicy flavor and the sugar adding sweetness.

 

I used about 1/2 cup of sugar and 2 tablespoons of cinnamon.

 

 

 

Mix together and set aside for the finishing touches after you cook your bread.

 

Step 4

Soak, Cook, & Dip Bread

 

 

The amount of time that you should drench bread in the batter for French toast can vary depending on the recipe and personal preference. As a general rule, you want to make sure that the bread is coated with the egg mixture on both sides, but not so much that it becomes soggy or falls apart.

 

A good guideline is to dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture for about 5-10 seconds on each side, or until it is fully coated but not overly soaked. The exact amount of time will depend on the thickness of the bread and the type of bread being used, so it may take a bit of experimentation to find the right amount of soaking time that works best for you.

 

I did about 3 seconds since they’re such small pieces.

 

 

 

Add 1 tbsp of butter to the skillet on medium-low heat until melted. Then, add about 12-14 pieces and cook each side of the bread for about 1-2 minutes each.

 

 

Aim to get them golden brown, but they do cook fast so just don’t let them go longer that 2 minutes, they will turn black quickly and don’t want burnt French toast bites. Repeat this until all of your little breads are cooked to your liking.

 

 

Not required, but certainly encouraged, dip the French toast bites into the cinnamon sugar. French toast and cinnamon sugar make a great pair because they complement each other’s flavors.
